COURSE OBJECTIVES:

UNIT I WIRELESS COMMUNICATION BASICS

Introduction to Wireless Communications - Applications - Advantages and disadvantages of wireless systems - Wireless system standards and regulatory requirements, RF and Microwave propagation basics, Wireless propagation channels - Frequency selective and time selective fading, Wireless communication systems - Point to point and cellular systems

UNIT II PROPAGATION MODELS AND LINK BUDGETS

Path loss - Free space propagation model, Ground reflected propagation model, Statistical path loss model - Okumura model, Hata model - Urban, rural and suburban models, Indoor propagation models. Propagation measurements and models, Log distance path loss model, Fading Models - Rayleigh fading, Rician fading - Statistical properties. Link budget and system performance

UNIT III FADING AND COUNTERMEASURES

Multipath fading - Flat fading and frequency selective fading, Small scale fading models - Rayleigh and Rician fading channels, Fading mitigation - Error correction coding, Interleaving, Equalization, Channel estimation. OFDM for frequency selective channels, Spread spectrum techniques - FHSS and DSSS

UNIT IV CELLULAR NETWORK DESIGN

Cellular network design - Frequency reuse, Interference, Co-channel interference and adjacent channel interference reduction, Handover concepts. Cellular standards - Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) - 2G, Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) - 3G, Long Term Evolution (LTE) - 4G, 5G - Key technologies and characteristics

UNIT V DIVERSITY TECHNIQUES

Diversity techniques - Spatial diversity - Receive diversity, Transmit diversity - Alamouti scheme, Selection combining, Equal gain combining, Maximal Ratio combining. Coding for diversity - Space time codes, Turbo codes and LDPC codes for wireless. Multi-antenna systems and MIMO
