COURSE OBJECTIVES:

UNIT I TRANSMISSION LINE THEORY

Introduction to Transmission Lines - Lumped and Distributed Elements, Transmission Line Equations, Wave propagation and Characteristic Impedance, Phase velocity and Group velocity, Attenuation constant and Phase constant, Primary and Secondary line parameters

UNIT II STEADY STATE ANALYSIS OF TRANSMISSION LINES

Terminated Transmission Lines - Reflection Coefficient, VSWR, Input Impedance, Analysis of lossless lines, Input impedance at a distance from the load, Standing waves on transmission lines, Point of attachment of different load impedances on Smith chart, Quarter wave transformer, Impedance transformation with transmission lines, Lossy transmission lines

UNIT III TRANSIENT ANALYSIS AND MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES

Transient Behavior of Transmission Lines, Step response of transmission line, Transient phenomena on transmission lines, Pulse propagation on transmission lines. Measurement of line parameters, Measurement of line impedance, Measurement of Reflection Coefficient, VSWR measurement, Return Loss measurement, S-parameters - Definition and measurement, Two-port network characterization using S-parameters

UNIT IV MICROWAVE COMPONENTS AND CIRCUITS

Microwave transmission media - Coaxial cables, Waveguides, Stripline and Microstrip - Characteristic impedance and cutoff frequency. Passive components - Attenuators, Power dividers, Directional couplers, Isolators, Circulators. Filters - Low pass, High pass and Band pass filters. Matching networks and impedance matching techniques

UNIT V RF SYSTEM DESIGN

Noise Figure and Noise Temperature, Cascade connection of RF components and noise figure calculation, RF Amplifier design - Stability and gain, Source and Load Matching, Receiver design for RF systems, Transmitter design for RF systems, Link budget analysis, System design considerations
